I need your help! I can't decide if I should paint over the wall of wood paneling that is on a 45* angle downstairs (don't know if you all noticed it, or were more distracted by the errant mole). It would make the room feel brighter and less like a dungeon, but I need to think about re-sale value...what would prospective buyers want? All comments appreciated!

You could ask a realtor what they would say...
My opinion is to leave it if the paneling itself is decent quality. I don't think someone would say, Oh, that's dark in there, yuk...for the simple reason that it is a basement. That's what they are usually like, even when finished. If they then want to paint to brighten it, they could. However, light carpet would lighten things up...(ah, the money....)
My opinion, for what it's worth.

Thanks, N! That's sort of what I was thinking! We're thinking Tax Refund for the carpet...yippee!

By the way, if anyone is interested...I picked up a hardcover copy of James Michener's SPACE at the library today for 50 cents. Once home, I looked at the bookshelf and we already have it! FREE TO A GOOD HOME!

I may not be the one to ask, since I have the urge to paint over every errant scrap of wood panelling in the world. Actually, Martin had to stop me painting the trim in our living room (it's sanded already, thanks to my zealoutry), and now I'm glad I didn't. I would have said, Paint the heck of it, but I can see Nancy's point and also, it takes a lot of paint to really cover panelling. Wow, the new carpet is going to make a huge difference! How fun!
Oh, N and I want to know--are you bothering with a garden this summer? I thought you would but we weren't sure.
A garden? Well, I don't think it's possible not to dig in the dirt and plant SOMETHING every Spring. This year I will probably not plant things that stay in until frost, like winter sqash, since we are hoping to be in the new house by Nov. Can't do without fresh tomatoes though, and we liked the sweet corn last year!

Hey just a random idea, but could you do some sort of whitewash...you know paint it and then wipe it off. May brighten it and yet keep the paneling look.
S.
S - good idea! Do you have experience in the whitewash technique? Would I have to water down the paint or something?
T
I don't know. I have no experience with it other than admiring someone else's work.
Maybe lowes.com??
