I took the plunge. After somehow managing to avoid providing snack for E's preschool this year, I signed up for a week that was available on the hallway calendar, only to learn that school is finished the week before. OOPS. Yet, now I am commited to delivering "birthday snack" since E has a summer birthday. Any ideas other than the sugar-laden frosted cupcake?

Ok, it might be a lot of work (unless you divide up a fruit tray), but what about fruit in fun paper cups, "garnished" with a fancy toothpick the kids can use to eat with?

Excellent idea, above. I ditto.
You could also bring baby carrots, garnished with nothing, and cups of water, as a LESSON.
Or you could go the LESSON route entirely: Maybe pita triangles and little dishes of hummus: A lesson in cultural diversity. Maybe a tiny bowl of rice: A lesson in what children around the world get by with. Or the tolerance route: Maybe bruised windfall apples: a lesson in raw veganism and whatever its called when you only eat fallen vegetables or fruits (so as not to hurt their souls by picking them). Maybe a few blades of grass: a lesson in what it feels like to be bovine.
Maybe boiled eggs? You could dye them a wierd color and start stories about the Maxwells that would last for years.
I DO hope I've been helpful, dahling.
This is even more work than the earlier suggestion, but really cute. J and I made them once upon a time.

Thanks oh wise women. Very good ideas. Kim, I think you need to get out of the house. :)
